Help: SigFeed Creation

This page explains how to create a new SigFeed.

First, here's a brief explanation of how SigFeeder works. SigFeeder finds out what is stored on your blog by reading your blog's RSS or Atom feed. This feed is a simple text file that almost all blog hosts and scripts provide that allows computers elsewhere on the internet to easily find out what you have written on your blog. In order for SigFeeder to create a SigFeed for you, it needs to find the address of your feed. But no worries if this is all confusing you; most of the time, it's pretty easy.

So let's get started. First, log in to your SigFeeder account, if you haven't already. Go to the "Your SigFeeds" page. (It'll be the first page you see after logging in.)

You may only have three SigFeeds per account. If you have already created three SigFeeds, you will not be able to create another; you will have to delete one of your prior SigFeeds before you can create a new one. When you have less than three SigFeeds, a "Create New SigFeed" buton will appear at the bottom of your "Your SigFeeds" page.

The next page will have some form controls on it. Usually, all you will have to do is type in the web address of your blog into the "Your blog's web address" field; you can then skip all of the other form elements on the page and click "Submit." SigFeeder will look at your blog and try to automatically find the feed it provides. If it is successful (and it will be in almost all cases), you'll be taken back to the Your SigFeeds page, and a note at the top of the page will tell you that the new SigFeed creation was successful.

If, however, you get an error, first check the Known Incompatibilities page to see if it is known if your blog software or site is incompatible with SigFeeder. Then try manually specifying the address of your blog's feed, as described below. If you are unsure how to find the address of your blog's feed, contact me and I'll try to help you out.

Specifying a feed address

You can also directly tell SigFeeder the address of your feed. You may want to do this if SigFeeder is unable to find your blog's feed, or you wish to use a different feed other than the one SigFeeder finds automatically.

To do this, on the "Create New SigFeed" page, type your blog's address into the "Your blog's web address" field as usual. Then click the "Use this feed" radio button to disable SigFeeder's attempt to automatically find your blog's feed address. A text field below this radio button will become enabled; enter your blog's feed address into that field. Think click "Submit." That should do it.

Putting your SigFeed in your forum signature

Now that you've got a SigFeed created, let's put it in your forum signature. To do that, go back to the Your SigFeeds page. Under the SigFeed you've created, select "Show HTML & BBCode Tags" from the Action menu and click Go.

The next page will show you two tags; one in BBCode and one in HTML. Most forum scripts use BBCode, but some will use HTML. (The HTML code is also useful for embedding your SigFeed on your personal website or MySpace page.) Copy the code you wish to use from the text box. Then log in to the forum you wish to use your SigFeed at, find the page where you can modify your signature, and paste the code in. (Make sure you're not breaking any rules on that forum by putting an image in your signature!) Then sit back and whatch your blog gain more visitors!
